REREC has successfully undertaken a number of renewable energy projects aimed at promoting renewable energy and accelerating rural electrification throughout the country.

Among the key milestones is the implementation of the Garissa Solar Plant (54.6MW), the largest grid-connected solar power plant in East and Central Africa. The plant was completed and connected to the national grid in November 2018 and currently contributes about 2% of the national energy mix.

The Corporation has also implemented twenty seven (27) solar mini-grids across Wajir, Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera and Garissa counties, serving over 3,693 customers and providing significant socio-economic benefits in education, health, entrepreneurship, employment, water pumping and food preservation. Additional mini-grids are under implementation under both the KEMP and KOSAP programmes.

In the area of solar water pumping, the Corporation has implemented solar water pumping projects in 23 boreholes in collaboration with Kisumu and Nyeri County Governments, while under KOSAP, 316 boreholes in 14 counties are being solarized

To support the Government's 24-hour economy agenda, the Corporation has installed 714 grid-connected high masts, 354 solar-powered high masts, 4,436 grid-connected street lights and 4,750 solar street lights in various parts of the country

Under the Solar for Schools Programme, the Corporation has provided solar-powered electricity to 4,860 primary schools and 76 secondary schools, greatly supporting digital learning and improving access to education.

The Corporation has further installed 20 diesel power stations in off-grid areas and hybridized existing diesel generators with solar PV systems in Takaba, Eldas, Rhamu and Laisamis to improve power affordability and reduce carbon emissions.

In addition, the Corporation has upgraded two mini-grids, namely Liboi and Ashabito, replaced batteries in Arabia, and provided funding for the upgrade and battery replacement of 23 solar mini-grids in the 2024/25 financial year.
